The author shows that the Epistle to the Colossians is essentially Christ centered. Paul, faced with the spread of false teaching, turns believers' minds and heart to the Person and work of Christ, with whose glory he himself is so taken up. For this reason the Epistle has a message for the Church in every age, and possibly especially for our own day. Amid all the cross-currents of thinking and practice in the Church at large, there is need for a firm reassertion of the Lordship of Christ, who alone is Head of the Church, and whose word must be the final authority. ***** In the Epistle to Philemon the master/servant relationship is not denied but is caught up into a new relationship that transmutes the former. In Christ both master and servant stand together, for they are one in Him. More that a personal word to Philemon, the Epistle, the author explains, has a message for the whole Church of God.
